Sandown Racecourse
History of Sandown RacecourseThe famous Sandown racecourse has one of the longest histories in Great Britain for horse racing, although Sandown had a very shakey start. To begin with there were many problems as to who would own the land of Sandown Park . Thanks is owed to Luitenant Colonal Owen Williams's inside connections with the royal family who finally gave the goahead for the land to become a racecourse. The first race was eventually run on 22nd April 1875, but unfortuneatyely due to the ever changing weather the skies opened and due to Great British rainfall many of the crowd decided not to make there presence known at the race. Fro those who showed up for the race they would have seen jockey Fred Archer riding the winning horse providing the crowd with an exciting and memorable race. Sandown Park being the enclosed racecourse soon became known to be reputable place to visit for high class sporting. In 1972, the course underwent a £3 million building programme. In September 1973, the Queen Mother opened the newly improved racecourse. Another £23 million renovation took place in 2002.
