Aintree Racecourse

The History Of Aintree Racecourse

Aintree Racecourse is known as one of the most known racecourses world wide due to the popularity of the Aintree Grand National. This druelling steeplechase is known for its brutal difficulty. The racecourse is the most feared of all by all professional jockeys. The racecourse is located at Aintree, Liverpool. For travellers by train your nearest stop is,Liverpool Lime Street Station which is located within walking distance. The main reason why this racecourse is so well known is due to the popularity of the annual Grand National Festival.

The Aintree Racecourse was first established in 1829.It began with flat races for several years and in 1839 steeplechases arrived. The race of the Grand National takes a great part in the history of Aintree, with the most dangerous fences ever that have caused the most terrifying accidents for even the most professional of jockeys and race horses.

Becher's Brook is the most notorious fence which received its name from Captain Becher, who was the first winner of the modern Grand National. In 1839, Becher fell from his mount in the first real Grand National , he immediately took cover from the race by hiding in a brook by the side of the fence. The current Becher's Brook is not quite as dangerous as it once was and the backward slope was evened out after two horses fell at the fence in 1989. Then the brook that Becher used for cover in his race was drained away to prevent fallen horses from drowning.

The Aintree Grand National is by far the most famous race but other races are also run there. The other exciting races include:

  • Becher Chase Day, with two races run on the Grand National track.
  • Old Roan Chase Day, which is the opening meeting to the jump season.
