Epsom Downs Race CourseThe first ever recorded race meeting was in 1779, held on the Downs at Epsom, one of the greatest sporting spectacles. Edward Smith Stanley, was the organiser of the race which began as entertainment for himself and friends to enable their fillies of 3 years old to race over one and a half miles. He named it 'the Oaks' after his grand estate. The race became an over night success and was introduced the next year as a race for colts and fillies. The race was named after the Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury flipped a coin and so began 'the Derby'. The contest was a mile long, starting in a straight line beyond the current five-furlong marker. I 1784 the Tattenham Corner was introduced, when the course was extended to a further mile- and-a-half. Main Events
