Epsom Downs Race Course

The first ever recorded race meeting was in 1779, held on the Downs at Epsom, one of the greatest sporting spectacles.

Edward Smith Stanley,was the organiser of the race which began as entertainment for himself and friends to enable their fillies of 3 years old to race over one and a half miles. He named it 'the Oaks' after his grand estate. The race became an over night success and was introduced the next year as a race for colts and fillies.

The race was named after the Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury flipped a coin and so began 'the Derby'.

The contest was a mile long, starting in a straight line beyond the current five-furlong marker. I 1784 the Tattenham Corner was introduced, when the course was extended to a further mile- and-a-half.

As its part of the fillies' version of the Triple Crown series, the race is open to 3 year old thoroughbred fillies who compete for &popund;350,000.
The Coronation Cups full distance is one mile, four furlongs and ten yards, and this race is for thoroughbreds from the age of four. The most famous horsesw to win the race are: Pretty Polly in 1905 and 1906, White Knight in 1907 and 1908, Petite Etoile in 1960 and 1961, Triptych in 1987 and 1988, and finally Warrsan in 2003 and 2004. The champion jockey in the Coronation Cup is the always impressive Lester Piggott. Piggot, who is hailed as the greatest jockey of all time, won the race nine times between 1953 and 1983.
