Royal Ascot

The famous Royal Ascot Racecourse is mainly used for thoroughbred horse racing. It is considered to be one of the United Kingdoms leading courses, it hosts nine of the thirty two Group 1 races. It's closely associated with the Royal Family being located along side Windsor Castle. Today, Ascot Racecourse stages 25 days of racing and is home to the prestigious King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

History of Ascot Racecourse

This Royal Ascot was was established in 1711 by Queen Anne. The first race, 'Her Majesty's Plate', was run on 11 August 1711. Only seven horses competed, each carrying a 12 stone weight on it's back. The winner took home a purse of 100 guineas. An act was passed in 1813 to ensure that the grounds would remain a public racecourse, and in 1913 the Ascot Authority was created to manage the racecourse. This Authority continues to manage the course to this day.

From its establishment until 1945, the only race run at this course was the Royal Meeting, which was a four-day event. Beginning in 1945, many more fixtures were introduced to Ascot Racecourse, including the Steeplechase and hurdles added in 1965.

The racecourse closed down for nearly a year in 2004 to undergo some major renovations which cost £185 million which was strongly criticised. The great grandstand didn't provide good views for the patrons. Eventually it was rectified in 2006 after another £10 million was spent on further renovation. It is now considered to be one of the top sporting venues in the UK.

In the English horse racing calendar the main seasonal highlights include the Royal Ascot Festival, the Cheltenham Festival, the Aintree Festival and the Classic Races series.
